I’m all about local. I was born and raised in Arkansas, we own a local business, and I support local businesses whenever I can (Walmart is LOCAL for us here in Northwest Arkansas, haha). I prefer eating at local restaurants over chains, and all my friends know I like to stay within a 5 mile radius of my home most days. Thankfully, Sam’s club is a hop and skip from my front door.
So I was thrilled and honored to be invited to P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Farm for Farm2Home, an event supporting Arkansas Made and Arkansas Grown products. Not only did I get to tour Allen’s magnificent home and gardens again, but I got to visit with farmers of different generations and hear their challenges and the reasons they still farm, in spite of them. It was fascinating, and further secured my belief that regional is good, and local is best.
Aaannnnddd….I got to hang with my buddies. Can’t beat Allen’s breezy porch on a hot day! Meet 2 of my faves, Jerusalem and Heather.
We were treated to the most delicious vegetarian lunch by Fayetteville chef Jerrmy Gawthrop from one my favorites, Greenhouse Grille. That’s a Black Bean Burger with Citrus Slaw, Berry Salad with Fresh Strawberry Vinaigrette, and a Greek Yogurt Cheesecake.
I encourage you to eat local, whenever you can. Support the restaurants owned by your neighbors. Shop at stores owned by people in your community. Visit your farmers’ market. Join a CSA. Heck, grow a garden! And get to know some Arkansas farmers and writers on this Pinterest board.
